The purpose of vaginal secretions is to moisten the vagina and cervix, in addition to removing old cells and preventing infections. There should be a moderate amount of clear and odourless mucus in the vagina. Normal vaginal discharge occurs in different amounts during the different phases of the cycle. This is due to the fact that the glands of the endometrium work according to a rhythm set by the hormones. The discharge can also change due to the use of hormonal contraception. Its colour, consistency or smell is individual to each woman. It is most often translucent or white in colour but can also be pink or brown if mixed with menstrual blood.

Depending on where you are in your cycle, you may find that your discharge can be quite thick and creamy at points, watery at others, and even take on a jelly-like egg-white consistency around the time you are ovulating.

The one time the texture is an inevitable sign of abnormal discharge is if it is lumpy, a bit like cottage cheese. If this is the case, you should book a doctor’s appointment.

The most important thing to remember, though, is that everyone has a different ‘normal’ and the best thing you can do is find out your version of that.

If its colour is whitish and its consistency uniform and not too thick, it is probably a normal discharge, which is not a cause for concern. Milky white discharge in women, or in this case natural mucus, is odourless and its quantity does not cause discomfort in daily life or physical activities. The abundance of mucus is usually small enough to be absorbed into underwear, but some women prefer to wear pantyliners to feel dry.

Observing vaginal discharge is not only helpful in detecting infections, for some, tracking changes in the consistency and colour of mucus can be part of natural family planning identifying fertile days in a woman's menstrual cycle.

This way, harmful bacteria have a harder time getting through and causing irritation – or worse. Amazing vagina! This stuff also keeps the area moist, and even provides some help to the process of fertilisation – handy if you are trying to get pregnant!

The amount of discharge you see in your underwear varies from person to person. Some may only notice the occasional spot, others may find it is a daily occurrence. The general rule of thumb, though, is that four millilitres a day should be the max that leaks out.

If you are unsure what that looks like, have a google, as there are internet videos that will give you a rough idea. Be aware that the amount will increase if you are ovulating, sexually aroused, pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Again, if you are aware that your discharge is heavier at certain times, wear a pantyliner to get you through those days, or pop a liner in your handbag so you have one to hand at all times.

For the above reasons, one could conclude that a late period does not mean anything bad. In fact, in some cases it is perfectly normal. However, it is worthwhile in all cases to seek medical advice. Particularly if your period delay is repeated every month or if you have not had your period for two months. Rarely it can be a symptom of a serious illness, such as cancer or diseases of the reproductive system. Also, don't delay seeing your doctor if you have other complaints: severe pain, excessive hair loss, vaginal spotting, acne (which you cannot control), being overweight or underweight.

Knowing how to prepare, especially if your period is late or irregular, is key. 

Wear a pantyliner a few days before your period is supposed to come. They come in different sizes and lock away moisture and odours, so you and your knickers will be a-okay when your period does finally come – surprise or not.

While white-coloured discharge is totally normal, texture-wise it should be the same all the way through, without lumps – whether it is sticky, gooey, thin, elastic or thick. This alternative version with clumps in it is not so great, and is very rarely going to be a positive discovery. 

The closest thing we can compare it to is cottage cheese (and we’re so sorry if this puts you off your favourite jacket potato topping for life!) But if what you see in your underwear, or on the toilet paper when wiping after a trip to the loo, is thick curd-like discharge with white chunks in it, then that is what we are talking about here.

Other signs that you may have it include itching in the area, or some pain or swelling, and stinging during sex or having a wee. You might also notice a yeasty sort of smell in your underwear.
